What is Gas Bloat Syndrome? and how does it Effect me?? and how can I change my diet to help relieve the symptoms???
Gas Bloat Syndrome is an range of complaints due to the inability to vent gas from the stomach to the esophagus post Nissen Fundoplication. The main complaint is bloating but not limited to, it also can include distension, early satiety, nausea, upper abdominal pain, flatulence, inability to belch and the inability to vomit. The cause of this condition is unknown but it has been stated that the following could effect/set off the condition - the inability of the LES to relax (not allowing your body to release the trapped gas in your stomach), Aerophagia, a common habit among patients that suffer(ed) from GERD - which can cause a problem post op as you are no longer able to vent gas, Mouth breathing, Dumping Syndrome and surgical injury to your Vagus Nerve.
To understand what this means, I'm going to break it down for myself and try and figure out how lifestyle changes can help this condition.

As always check with your doctor as the condition could be caused by something other them just post op complications. Better safe then sorry!!
Satiety - Feeling Full after a meal. Remember the function of your Fundus is to store undigested food and gas released during digestion. See a pattern yet?
Nausea - the excess gas trapped in your stomach can cause nausea
Upper Abdominal Pain - This pain can be the worst..mine sits right on my breast bone and sometimes mimics heartburn.
Flatulence - if you have had a Nissen Fundoplication you know all about this...probably much more then you will ever want to admit.
Inability to belch - I do not suffer from this so I am not able to commit on this topic. Have been able to belch since the procedure. My boys actually taught me how to belch when I was suffering from GERD. Gotta love having three teenage boys!!
Inability to vomit - the number of people who are like what?!? you can't vomit that doesn't make sense. Then the short version of what a NF is and how it works is sure to follow. Have been blessed that this has not been an issue..(knock on wood) I have not had the urge or when i did I relaxed to the best of my ability and the urge passed.
Understanding the Causes:
LES not relaxing the is a given since the surgery is designed to prevent gas stomach acid from backing up into your esophagus..So this one is a given.
Aerophagia/Mouth Breathing - Once this air is in your GI tract any that is not absorbed into the small intestines has to go somewhere. After a NF this generally leads to bloat/abdominal pain.
Dumping Syndrome - please have this checked out - better safe then sorry!!
Vagus Nerve Damage - This is something that I just started researching. Some feel the positioning of the surgeon during the procedure can make a difference if the nerve can be damaged during surgery. Will post on this later when I have more data. SAGES has a lot of information related to vagus nerve injuries and how to prevent.
I believe that increased gas bloat needs to be addressed through a healthy Gut First: How to achieve a Healthy Gut? A good ProBiotic is the first step to healthy gut, exercise and eating vitamin enriched foods.

I just found your site.. I had a fundoplication & small hiatal hernia repair 5 weeks ago today.. I have been experiencing terrible gas pains in my breastbone area and of course a ton of flagulence. I have been eating small pieces of chicken and chew very long and carefully.. I take gas-x and even beano and this does not seem to help.. and my throat is very rough almost like when I had silent gerd (lump in throat) What am I doing wrong? thanks, kerry

I had my fundoplication July 2016. I am having trouble swallowing I sometimes feel like I have to vomit but cannot and the gas is very bad. Any words of advice on how to control it I have lost 45 pounds I am now 150pounds.
ReplyDeleteSo, it's been over a year since your surgery. are things back to normal? I just had mine including the wrap on Oct 17, 2017. I've lost 15lbs so far, and my stomach hasn't been the same. Swallowing seems to be getting better, but the pain in the chest isn't going away yet.
DeleteI has a nf and hernia repair a year and a half ago. when having severe pain in my left upper quad of the rib area.i become nauseated and throw up bitter clear stuff. endo done states my wrap is loose. but, the pain and the vomiting and not being able to drink milk is such a problem. what is my problem?...help

ReplyDeleteTwo years post op, and I have developed major food allergies. I do think that, given the number of people with hiatus hernias who don't have issues, it would be advisable to work on your gut health prior to having the surgery. For me it's utterly ruined my life.
ReplyDeleteBefore having this surgery, try sorting your diet out. Try the GAPS diet (which I currently have to live by if I don't want to feel like utter death), take good quality probiotics, give up processed foods and sugar, and eat properly. And for the love of God, avoid antibiotics as much as you can.
The nissen fixed my reflux, but ruined my life.

ReplyDeleteHi All, it appears many have similar issues with the surgery. I relate to all of you. I just had my reflux surgery reversed and hoping to be back to normal. What made BIG difference after trying countles diets, supplements and probiotics was two things. Please Research it. Water Fasting and adopting a WholeFoodsPlantBased Diet SOS (salt, oil, sugar free) please please please look it up. My life was ruined for years until i adopted this lifestyle then i felt back to normal and my body showed me the surgery was the only thing left to remove. I just did so its too soon but o was already almosy 95% normal with the diet.

Hi, I had a Nissan fundo surgery July 2018. I am not happy with the severe gas, bloating, no ability to belch and upper abdominal discomfort. Also some Lowe GI symptoms.

I wished I would have tried the Lynx procedure but my surgeon said the Nissen wrap was better.
I am also very dismayed over the fact that they do no follow up only one follow up visit two weeks post surgery, and I never see you again.

had my second surgery 6 months ago and still can not eat normal food do not know what to do
ReplyDeleteSo I had a very large hiatal hernia and had a partial fundoplication in 2015. That failed and the surgeon went back in and redid it in 2016. That failed. It appears my problem is worse now than before the first surgery. I've now gone to a 2nd surgeon who says that the 1st surgeon has really screwed up. The first one didn't even run a 24 hour pH test on me. My DeMeester score is now 45 (normal should be below 15).
ReplyDeleteThe new surgeon wants to do a full fundoplication now. I'm very nervous after reading the side effects online. He said that the inability to throw up is rare. For some reason that one really makes me nervous, even though I rarely throw up anyway. After reading hear, now I'm very nervous about the bloat. I'm also worried about all the mesh the first surgeon put in and trying to get it out now to redo the surgery. Are you all having these symptoms for longer than 6 months after surgery??
3 weeks post NF & small hiatal hernia repair & doing fine! No stomach pain at all 3 days after surgery. Still take small bites & chew well but eating sandwiches/fritos etc just fine. Able to burp a Little so not very bloated. No feed! Drinking 2nd brew as I compose this.

I am happy to find this site! I had my NF January 2000- yes, 17 years ago! I still have severe gas bloat syndrome. It has been tough and never knew there was a community of people out there like yourselves. I have literally tried everything including a vegan diet which I found difficult on the gut. Anyhow-I just assume it is how my life will always be but I am curious to know more about maybe having it undone. If anybody has any ideas to help the gas let me know!
ReplyDeleteI had it done 17 years ago also and the gas is ridiculous! Everything I eat gives me gas. I have not been able to vomit in 17 years. The bloating is crazy. I look 8 months pregnant after I eat. But the gas is the most embarrassing. I use gas-x, beano, charcoal pills and nothing works. Is reverse surgery my only option?
DeleteYou best option is to adopt a starch based whole foods plant based diet SOS free. low fat, no salt, oil, sugar. Intermittent fasting and natural hygiene principles like sleeping enough, walking, exercise, smart food combining. For deeper results i recommend Dr Mdougall elimination diet. it will show you the foods that are triggers of gas. for sure try a reversal if possible. Keep it mind it may take months post UNDO OP to get back at your best but its worth it.
ReplyDeleteHi all- i had my fundoplication back in may and had been amazing for the past 4/5 months but i had a bout of food poisoning in late sept. and vomitted violently maybe 8 times with no direct evidence of mesh tearing/ dislodgment but ever since i will sometimes get a sensation of a slight lump in my throat/ tightness along the left side of my throat and slight nausea from time to time. Anyone experience anything similar? Again i have no ostentatious, outward symptoms- no distension in the stomach, no pain that one would assume with torn abdominal mesh but i dont know what else it could be.
ReplyDeleteI had nissen fundoplicaton April 3, 2017. Things seemed OK. Until recently I am having pain where the surgery was performed. Feeling full, aching pain. It is making me feel tired and sick. I was passing gas like there was no tomorrow. Now I am not. I am wondering if I now have a gas build up going on. I do not have the GERD anymore. Yeah!!

I hope I have 100% success with this surgery,because the recovery and clear diet has been a bitch. All I fantasize about it food and I can't eat it for a few more weeks.
ReplyDeleteI had hernia repair and nf on January 30th...Had second surgery 8 hours later for internal bleeding from the nf surgery..then gave me two units of blood..Will go back next week for 3 month follow up with barium xrays.My problem now is soo much gas and bloating..I eat pretty much of what I want accept for nuts , salads ,and really hard or crunchy foods..Hope all gets better for you..
DeleteI am 3 weeks post-op NF and hiatal-hernia repair, the second time. My first one from 2008 failed. I do not remember the gas being this uncomfortable. I felt it immediately after surgery in my left shoulder the most and the pain is partially relieved by flatulence but I obviously cannot be around people! Simethicone helps slightly but the pain is unreal. It does travel from shoulder to chest area but as I said is relieved with flatulence. I am an RN, I don't believe it is cardiac in nature. Has anyone else felt this pain in the shoulder or chest?

DeleteI had nissen and hiatal hernia repair with mesh on 10/11/18. My surgeon only performs GERD surgery in the Denver area and is THE surgeon to see for GERD. He very specifically told me that any hiatal repair will cause referred, pretty intense (at times) for the first few weeks. I did have the pain but after 8 weeks or so, it subsided. My huge problem is almost constant nausea. So far, I have lost 62 lbs. I live on Zofran and Reglan, although I try to take as little Reglan as possible due to major side effects. When I can eat, I am immediately full and uncomfortable. I cannot belch or vomit.
DeleteAbout a month ago I started experiencing pain at the base of my ribs, pain again radiating to my left shoulder, pain in my whole chest and esophagus. Had a repeat upper GI 1 week ago and the NF looks fine as did the hernia repair---from the inside. My GI doc did a small dilation as the esophagus looked fine---again from the inside. Everything else in stomach and small intestine also looked fine. Next week I will have CT to see if there is anything wrong with the mesh or hernia--from the outside. I am scared and depressed, wondering if I will ever feel normal again and be able to go back to work. I'm not sure that GERD was worse than the nausea, discomfort and out right pain I have now. If the docs had any ideas it wouldn't be so scary.
Yes yes yes for 5 days after op felt like someone had dislocated my shoulder! It does get better. My problem is very smelly flatulence now 5 weeks post op. If anyone has any ideas to get rid of that I’d be grateful ( op was 15th Jan 2018)
ReplyDeleteJust had FP with repair of HH on Feb. 22, 2018.....On a soft diet of mostly clear liquids with mashed potatoes thrown in. I am very bloated and finally able to pass gas. I can only eat a few bites before I feel so full. I hope this works because I have been dealing with heartburn for yrs.
ReplyDeleteYep, that is perfectly normal. Your stomach has shrunk and you will need to take small amounts of soft unfibrous food for probably 2 months at least. Small pieces and LOTS of chewing before swallowing ( if you were a fast eater, you will likely have to change for at least 6months and possible thereafter.
ReplyDeleteI am coming up on 5 months and am still limiting hard substances just to make sure and will shoot for a 6 month timeline before attempting to eat dense meats and uncooked veggies.
Follow the diet and be patient. Life will hopefully be much better for you soon.
I can’t believe no one has informed you that the discomfort you are feeling is from the CO2 gas that was used to inflate the surgical area so that procedure cans be done laparoscopically. Immediately after my surgery, it was this that gave me most discomfort, not the surgery.
ReplyDeleteI went 3 weeks with very profound discomfort in the left shoulder area and would occasionally experience excruciating pain when the diaphragm was contracted during short breaths.
Unfortunately, pain meds are ineffective in relieving the discomfort because it is phrenic nerve related. I would bet KitKat is no longer experiencing the discomfort now that is is four weeks now.
I also had the full wrap with Hiatal hernia repair 4 weeks ago...first week wasnt so bad just pain from the gas. One week PO the diarrhea started and last week finally convinced them to check my stools and it came back positive fecal leukocytes. Forgot to mention I have had C Diff 3 times in the last 5 yrs.
ReplyDeleteSo, long story short they scheduled me for a colonoscopy yesterday and it looks like I have a pin hole in my appendix leaking in to the colon or stomach. They are sending me for CTscan next week.
Could this have happened during surgery? Anybody else ever experience this?
Hi there, had a full Nissan and h/hernia repair last August- after so ma y years on Pop's. Two things have become obvious since my Pop's, I now have an enlarged muscle (too long to type) which makes swallowing difficult. I also can only eat small amounts and whatever I eat gives me horrendous flatulence!!! This seems to be my life now, I do seem to have swapped one load of probs for others!

I had my surgery October 17, 2017 and had the CO2 gas pains in my left shoulder for nearly 3 weeks. I was much more painful that the incision site pain.
ReplyDeleteThere’s no way you should still be affected by the CO 2 gas in your body, as it should have dissipated long ago. Gas and pressure after eating is common way past the 3 months I was told but I just celebrated my 6 month anniversary with a thin hanger steak that I cut cut into small pieces and chewed well with no after effects other than the typical slight flatulance that although much less prevelslent, still exists. I am hoping that as I continue to the 12 month period, symptoms will continue to decrease.

Probably see your doctor again to discuss where you are and what to expect in coming months. It doesn’t sound to me by what you describe that you need a redo however. Diet and plain alkaline water for me has provided satisfactory results. Good luck.
I had my surgery January 4th, 2018. So, today May 15th, I still feel a lot of gas after eating, especially late at night or early the following morning. It is almost as if the food gets digested much slower now, hence producing all the gas. I had a half wrap due to small hiatal hernia and years of reflux. I no longer feel acid reflux but notice that my gas issues are worse depending on what I eat or drink (fizzy drink, gassy vegetables). I tried one fizzy drink and felt horrible gas pain for hours so no more of that. I experienced 1 stomach bug episode last month and could not throw up. It was mostly dry heaving and saliva that came up. So that felt very uncomfortable. It's a struggle figuring out what foods work and which don't but if I don't get acid reflux ever again, maybe it will be worth it. You have the surgery expecting a better life but then have all these other side effects as a result.
ReplyDeleteSurfing the web for some help and came across this site. Hoping for some fellow peeps to chat with. I had my surgery on Jan 9,2018, am doing well as far as my stomach and NF goes. I now feel like a have an IBS situation (or something) going on. I have such severe cramps and gas etc. it is physically draining. I call them attacks I can not leave the bathroom. Doubled up in pain diarrhea, nausea etc. lasts a couple hours then goes away leaving me again drained and exhausted. Never know when they are going to hit me or what is triggering them. I am trying to eat healthy small meals, follow all the guidance and I am just lost right now. getting so I don't want to leave my house. Anyone else out there with similar "attacks"? My reflux is great tho!
ReplyDeleteI just had my NF op done on 22 May 2018 and started on blended diet. But i cant eat much. Bloating also comes occasionally and is a problem whenever i drink milk(ensure/ nutren fiber). I still feel that clear water takes time to flow down compared to flavored soup or drinks. I have some nagging shoulder discomfort , which i feel is slowly resolving after 4 days. I just want to know if anyone can tell how long before I can eat more solid food like mee or meat like chicken. It really tests my patience. I used to be active in sports, now I am worried this operation would be a setback for me to participate in sport activities. Please advice. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteUsually the surgeon doesn't want you to eat solids until your follow-up. I know it seems like a long time but you don't want that opening to be irritated I've had it done twice so I know how hard it is. Within three to four weeks you won't feel too bad. You should be able to get active.I liked Boost and cream soups!
ReplyDeleteI just underwent my fourth nissen surgery. My initial surgery was in Dec 2012, with surgeries following in June 2015, February 2017 and June 2018. Needless to say my wrap has only remained intact for a total of 1.5 yrs during this time. The remaining time, I suffered with iimmense pain waiting for multiple tests to be completed so my physician could prove to himself that the wrap was undone once again. Has anybody else experienced multiple surgeries in such a short period of time? My surgeon is known to be one of the best around for this particular procedure. My father passed away in 2010 with gastric cancer at the age of 56. And my sister passed away in 2011 from colorectal cancer at 29 years of age. I’m trying to remain hopeful that this surgery will be my last.
ReplyDeleteI just had my NF done a week ago. It was done to repair a very large paraesophageal hernia. I never experienced GERD. It sounds like I have been very lucky. I’ve been eating normal food but in smaller amounts since day 2. My surgeon told me to cautiosly experiment so I have been. My only issue at this point is gas. I’m going to try some OTC gas meds later and see if they help.

ReplyDeleteNothing is going to help us feel relief my friends..seems like gas and flatulence is gonna be our best friend for the rest of our lives.I've tried(like many of you)literally everything, from diets to meds, no drinks before and after meals, no this, no that, no lying after meals, exercise..no matter what I do, I get bloated. Sometimes even exercise can be a trigger.

It's really embarrassing to be around people, especially during the night, if I don't get rid of the gas, it gets really painful. During the day it's fine, but late at night and first thing in the morning I have to be alone to pass gas,which means no social life. Wonder if someone has the same thing going on...
I have IBS too. It was bad before but yes, now it is unbearable.

ReplyDeleteI had Nissen Fundoplication surgery a month ago. No more acid reflux but oh the horrible gas. Also, I gag and retch but I can't throw up. I can't anything today and feel horrible. My shoulders hurt after surgery but that went away. I am hopeful this will pass.
ReplyDeleteShoulder pain is the gas they inflate you with, and also because they've disturbed a nerve in your diaphragm which according to my GP is associated with your left shoulder. Took me a two week course of codeine and some oramorph to shift it. Flactuance? How about the hubble bubble toil and trubble belly after eating first? I managed mine from ZERO CHEESE. It's the fats and oils that trigger me off. They say eat 'oily' substances, but the moment you do, off you go. My diet is home based now ... Lasagne (fine chopped pasta) fish pie (chew nicely) mince loads of mince, but rinse the oils out. Try magerines rather than butter.. Oil is your worst enemy!! Been going three weeks now with the occasional heegly jeeblies and faaaaaaaarts

PS. I can't get a food burp up either, I often retch In the morning but only from dehydration or from having a well deserved glass of wine... But nothing comes up. Its a struggle, but if you breathe through it, it will subside. Happens maybe once a week, promoted from the likes of deodorant or household 'fresheners' A lot of what I put it down to is years of reflux, and it's now pretty much just force if habit from what I'm used to. I relate to certain smells, and literally gag, but now nothing much comes up. Surgery fixed the physical, but it doesn't fix the mental part of it, which for me may take some time yet :)
DeleteIt’s been 2 years since my surgery. I’m thankful for the surgery no matter what problems I have now because I almost died. 98% of my stomach was through my diaphragm. It was the most excruciating pain I’ve ever had. I can’t eat a meal without getting choked. The gas is so embarrassing. It’s not smelly, but it could wake the dead it is so loud. It would make a teenage boy proud to pass gas of that magnitude. Chest pains that mimic a heart attack. The list goes on and on. I’ve had my esophagus stretched 2 times but it didn’t help. I’ve resigned myself to live with it and pray my surgery doesn’t fail.
ReplyDeleteI had the Nissen procedure in 2014 with complications that followed. After visiting seven different Doctors I was able to find one that told me they had twisted my intestines up. I had to go through 4& 1/2 hours of surgery to take down the Nissen and install the toupet wrap. I have to deal with excessive gas, but I am able to eat a nice steak and any other thing I want
ReplyDeleteI had a fundoplication surgery on 1/4/2018. Now a year later everytime I eat, I feel bloated, almost as if the food is sitting on the top oF my stomach. I usually need to do some spinning on bike or other form of exercise to burp and for stomach to feel as if food has moved. Is this a common symptom a year after surgery?
ReplyDeleteJust found your post. I had a laparoscopic nissan fundoplication 12/2017. I had a very large sliding hiatal hernia that was causing significant anemia, which is the reason I chose the surgery. I recall the GI nurse practitioner telling me prior to the surgery, that some patients experience increased gas following NF. Didn't think much of it, till I had procedure done. Boy.....how embarrassing. I asked the surgeon afterward what causes it and what I can do to prevent it/control it. His reply was it was mostly likely due to the antibiotic used in surgery affecting my gut--that was 2 months post op he told me this.....the antibiotic was out of my system at that point. Types of foods I eat do not seem to matter or be the cause. I have tried Beano, probiotic and those don't seem to help. The excess flatulence is daily and as I said, very embarrassing.
